On-Line Learning
Technology provides a powerful tool for learners to acquire new skills and knowledge at their own pace, outside of the boundaries of the traditional classroom. In particular, computer networks (e.g., the Internet) are increasingly being used to deliver on-line instruction to students any time and any place.
To prepare students to function effectively in an on-line learning environment, students entering BYU-Idaho in Fall 2000 are required to have one on-line learning experience to graduate. Approved on-line courses are designated in the class schedule with section numbers between 801 and 899. These courses can also be used to fulfill general education, elective, or major course requirements. On-line courses are to be completed during the regular semester (or term). Because the student controls the on-line learning experience, a high degree of self-discipline is needed to be successful.
On-line courses taken from other institutions or organizations may be approved as meeting this requirement. Such courses must represent collegiate level subject matter, have required a level of effort equivalent to at least one semester credit hour, and have been offered by an accredited college, university, or other well-known credible learning organization. Requests for using an on-line course not taken at BYU-Idaho to meet this requirement must be submitted to the Registrar for approval. Students must provide a record of course completion such as a transcript, grade report, or completion certificate which clearly identifies the course and institution.
On-line course information is available at http://www.byui.edu/insttech/online.htm. A list of on-line courses is available at http://www.byui.edu/insttech/OnlineCourses/onlinecalendar.htm (select a semester or term).
