This course explores spiritual themes and concepts in art, architecture and music. Topics may include the nature of worship, art as an approach to the Divine, or religious symbolism. |
| DESCRIPTION: |
Students develop the ability to analyze works of religious art from a symbolic perspective, thematically, and in the context of function. |
| TOPICS: |
Areas of emphasis include: Nature of Worship: how does one approach divinity?; Art as worship: Visual arts and music arts. Creation, Mortal and Divine: Art as a means of approaching the divine; Religious architecture. Art as Religious Instruction. Symbols and Symbolism: Nature of symbols; History of religious symbolism. Readings include: Theology and the Arts; Education for Eternity; The Meaning of Meaning; Voicing Creations Praise: Towards a Theology of the arts; Good Taste, Bad Taste, and Christian Taste; Mythology; Dictionary of Subjects and Symbols in Art; Temple and Cosmos: Beyond This Ignorant Present; Egyptian Book of the Dead; Signs and Symbols in Christian Art; The Hero with 1000 Faces |

Readings, essays and research on the major areas of study listed above. A group presentation thoroughly presenting a spiritual theme in art from a variety of perpectives and exams. |
