BYU-Idaho Religion Requirement

Religion

1. Two hours of religion credit per semester,  up to 14 credits, are required of students of BYU-Idaho for a Bachelor's degree. Two hours of religion credit per semester, up to eight credits, are required of students for an Associate degree. On-line religion courses are given full credit toward the religion requirement.

Graduation Requirement

2. All graduates, starting their degree programs Fall 2001 and thereafter, must have completed four hours of credit in Book of Mormon (Rel. 121-122 OR Rel 221, Book of Mormon for Prospective Missionaries).

If these course transfer from another church University or Institute as elective credit, the requirement is filled.

Transfer of             Religion Credit

1. Transfer students must take one religion class each semester of attendance at BYU-Idaho.

2. Exception:  Students who have completed a baccalaureate degree at BYU or BYU-Hawaii have filled the religion requirement.

Religion credit received at C.E.S. Institutes of Religion or other Church schools may transfer as elective credit  when the following conditions are met:

1. Course number is 100 or above

2. Course is equivalent to a religion course taught at BYU-Idaho.

3. Course is taken for two credits.

4. Required paperwork is sent to BYU-Idaho Registrar from the LDS Institute of Religion or Church School.

5. Letter grade is given.

In rare cases,  C.E.S. Institute credit MAY be considered for application to religion credit.

Second Religion Class

It is the desire of the Church Board of Education that students be in a religion class each term.  A student may need to take two classes in a given term.  After the first day of class, a student may register for a second religion class if there is available seating.  A student who desires to take a second class should meet with the instructor of that class to complete their registration.

Attendance

Each instructor may establish their own criteria for giving credit, but generally, lack of attendance would affect a student's grade in a significant way and could result in no credit for the class, thus requiring the student to retake the class.

Waivers

As a rule, there is a no waiver policy except when a student has been denied a graduation diploma from BYU-Idaho because the religion requirement was not completed, and reasons for non-completion were beyond the control of the student.

For clarification and/or application fro a waiver see the Dean of the College of Religious Education and Social Science- Make appointment with Dixie Nordfelt, Office Manager, @(208) 496-1430.
