The  mission  of  the  Brigham  Young  University-Idaho  English  Department  is  to  enable  students  to  use  writing  and  reading  processes  as  tools  to  create,  understand,  and  analyze  strong,  college-level  documents  from  a  variety  of  sources  for  both  freshman  and  upper  division  writing  classes.    Additionally,  through  literature  classes,  the  English  Department  seeks  to  introduce  students  to  traditional  and  non-traditional  forms  of  literature,  critical  theories,  literary  movements,  and  written  criticism.

 
Writing Center
Qualified,  trained  peer  Writing  Assistants,  under  the  supervision  of  the  Writing  Center  Administrator,  work  individually  with  students  in  free,  confidential  writing  sessions.

 
Scholarships
The  English  Department  administers  the  L&R  Biddulph  Scholarship  for  English  majors.  Contact  the  English  Department.

    A.A.S.  in English (59)
    The Associate of Arts and Sciences in English provides students an opportunity to meet the BYU-Idaho General Education requirements and prerequisite course work for a bachelor degree in English. The degree, designed principally for students who plan to transfer to other universities, meets the General Education requirements at most transfer institutions. The degree is available only to students who declared this major and registered prior to Fall 2001.

    Literary Studies focuses on the interpretation and appreciation of literature from the perspective of several critical theories. Course work includes British and American literary history, genre and authors studies, ethnic and world literature, and literary theory. This emphasis culminates with English 442, "Literature and Culture," a course which provides a focused exploration of literature within a cultural context--myth, philosophy, art, or history. Literary Studies prepares students for further graduate study in English or other professional programs.
