How do I obtain a BYU-Idaho intern?
The second set of links at left will explain the entire process in detail. However, the basic guidelines are:
- Discuss the position/opportunity with the appropriate Department Coordinator
- Sign a Master Internship Agreement
- Recruit, interview and hire a student
- Remind the student to complete the necessary BYU-Idaho paperwork to receive credit
- Ensure supervision and mentorship during the experience
- Complete the online evaluation at the end of the experience (it will be emailed to you)
What is the Master Internship Agreement ?
The Master Internship Agreement is a legally binding contract that protects the student, the experience provider, and the University. It outlines the responsibilities of each party during an internship.
What is my responsibility if I hire a BYU-Idaho intern?
As noted in the Master Agreement, a few of your basic responsibilities would be to provide supervision, meaningful opportunities & responsibilities, and valuable training to BYU-Idaho interns. Some departments may ask you for a mid-experience evaluation; an end-of-experience evaluation will also be emailed to you from the Internship Office.
Do I have to pay the intern?
Compensation is to be defined by provider and intern prior to employment start date. The employer has no legal obligation to pay the intern; however, the level of compensation offered strongly correlates with the quality of candidates who apply for the position. Pay is usually commensurate with experience and industry standards.
What is my responsibility regarding Workman's Compensation?
Responsibilities vary by state. Please contact your state's Workman's Compensation Program, or click here for a link to your state's website.
What do I do if there is a problem with my intern or the internship program?
Sometimes misunderstanding occur - it is generally wise to discuss the issue with the intern to ensure that they know there is a problem, and what they need to do to correct the situation. If any problems arise, please contact the Internship Office.
