Ray and Darlene Duffin were born and raised in Salt Lake City. They met in German class at East High School in 1959. After graduating, Ray enlisted in the Army reserve serving 6 months active duty and then 10 years as an Army reservist. He served a mission in the Southwest British Mission from 1962-1964. Ray and Darlene were married in 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple and are the parents of 6 children-4 girls and 2 boys-and have been blessed with 16 darling grandchildren ages 5-15 years. They just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Ray started working at the age of 7 at the Bonneville Motel, a family-owned business in Salt Lake. He graduated from the U of U in 1970 with a BS in PE. The motel was demolished in 1968 and was replaced by the first Marie Calendar Pie Restaurant to be built in UT. Ray worked at that restaurant until they moved to CA to manage a Marie Calendar Restaurant in Arcadia. They moved back to UT with 4 children to take over a new Marie Calendar Restaurant in S.L.C. A new opportunity came Ray’s way and he went to New York to train as a stock broker with Merrill Lynch Stock Brokerage Firm where he worked for many years. He then managed A.G. Edwards in Salt Lake, added 2 more children to their family and accepted a position as a wholesaler with Balcor /American Express. He covered 13 western states until 1989. Ray and family moved to Mission Viejo, CA where they lived until 2007.

Ray served as a Bishop’s counselor in SLC for 6 years, served as High Councilor in Mission Viejo for 13 years, YM Pres. in CA, High Priest group assistant in Sandy and served many years coordinating all-Church and stake athletics. In Monrovia Ward, CA, Ray and Darlene served together as activities chairmen and Ray served as Elders Quorum President. Ray was voted PTA president for one year at the Evergreen Jr. High where his children attended. Darlene was also very active in the PTA while her children were young.

Darlene’s favorite activity has been wife, mom and homemaker. In between children, she worked as secretary to Dr. Lowell Bennion, Dean of Students, U of U; Secretary to the Dir. of Facilities, Saddleback Valley USD, Mission Viejo, where she retired after 20 years, and secretary for Savas Greene CPA Firm in SLC for 6 years. She served as YW Pres. and Advisor; Primary Pres., pianist and chorister; Relief Society Counselor, visiting teacher, pianist and chorister and as an early morning Seminary teacher. She sang with the Allegro Chorus for 5 years.

Ray has played golf since 8 years of age and has played with Billy Casper, Gary Player and many other golf enthusiasts but his favorite golf partner is Darlene who has played about 7 years. They also both enjoy bike riding, playing the piano, cooking, traveling, gardening and movies. Darlene enjoys quilting, singing, card making and playing games with the grandkids.
