Ricks College Health Fair 1998

Submitted by: Susan Garbett

Plan now to attend the health fair sponsored by the Wellness Committee at Ricks College. As many of the church leaders suggested at October conference, a strong connection exists between our bodies and our spirits. The state of our health is dependent upon the decisions we make regarding our diet, the amount and quality of the exercise we provide our body, and our ability to handle the everyday stressors of our lives. Of course, there are other variables that we do not have control over impacting our health also, including our genetic make-up and gender. The health fair will include educational opportunities as well as assessment tools to allow us to better evaluate our own health status and make informed decisions regarding our health.

This all-day event will be held on Thursday, November 5th in the West Ballroom of the Manwaring Center from 9 a.m until 4 p.m. Blood tests will be available again this year, however, DMBA will only cover that cost every three years. This includes wellness screenings in physician offices. The tests are offered at a significant reduction in cost, however, and can be taken with you to your next office physical. The tests offered include the cholesterol panel, chemistry panel and complete blood count. The total cost for the three tests is $35. If you plan to have your blood drawn, you will need to be fasting for 8-12 hours prior to the test.

Other booths to plan to visit include the strength and flexibility testing area, stress reduction and relaxation, diet planning and massage therapy. Women will want to prepare for the exercise area by dressing in slacks. A representative from the environmental area of District VII Health Department will come equipped to test the nitrate levels of your well water. Just bring a sample of your well water in a clean jar to be tested. Immunizations will also be offered for those involved in the hepatitis series of planning on overseas travel. Approximately 25 health related areas well be represented. Plan now to come and participate!
