"INJURIES ON THE JOB"
Submitted by: Kent Hughes
Three of the most common injuries on the job include, but are not limited to, eyes, back, and cuts. One way to avoid job-related injuries, whether they are at the office, in a shop, or in a vehicle, is to be aware of the dangers associated with the equipment we are using. It is important to read, understand, and follow the instructions and precautions outlined with each item we use. It makes no difference if you are a secretary sitting in front of a computer monitor or a welder. If you do not follow the simple safety precautions, you both can injure your eyes. Whether it is an anti-glare filter or a welder's helmet, both can protect your eyes. A good pair of safety glasses is well worth the price if you work in an area where objets can get into your eyes. Most back related injuries occur when we lift objects improperly or stand with poor posture. Some helpful hints include: bending your knees, not your back; lift with your legs, and hold items close to your body; lift objects only chest-high and stand on a stool if necessary; when standing to work, place one foot on a stool and change positions often; walk with good posture, keeping the head high, chin tucked in, toes straight ahead and wear comfortable, proper-fitting, low-heeled shoes. When sitting, chairs should be low enough to place both feet flat on the floor with the knees level with the hips. Sit firmly against the back of the chair. A good night's sleep on a firm mattress is good for you and your back. Sleep on your side with knees bent, or on your back with a pillow under your knees. In the event you cut yourself, wash the wound with soap and water, apply an antibiotic and bandage with a clean dressing. IF necessary, seek medical advice. Please follow all safety instructions. By doing so it will make your workplace a safe environment. For the safety of you and your co-workers, common sense will go a long way. Remember, if something can hurt me, it can also injure someone else.
