COLOR GUIDE

Core Colors

Pantone PMS 300 or "BYUI Blue" is our branding color. Black, white and BYUI Blue combined with the logo gives us a recognizable brand worldwide. Use BYUI Blue, black, and white. Approximately 80% of your off-campus designed should use these core colors.

In the past, the pantone color swatch used for BYUI Blue was PMS 660. Due to subtle shifts from various printing mediums, the pantone color swatch has been changed to PMS 300. This swatch matches what the BYUI Blue has become.

Accent Colors

Accent colors have been developed and are available to be used sparingly. Remember that these colors are only meant to support our brand color. Overuse of the accent colors would detract from our visual identity. Only use accent colors on approximately 20% of your off-campus design.

Print Vs. Web

When switching between print and web, colors often vary. To increase color consistency between print and web materials, use the color breakdowns below for our core and accent colors.

Print

Spot colors:

Spot colors can be used when printing. This is a more expensive process, but turns out the best quality. When using Pantone inks for our brand color, print using Pantone 300 C for coated papers, and Pantone 300 U for uncoated papers. Rarely will you need to use Pantone inks for accent colors, but if for some reason it is necessary use the codes below.

cmyk:

CMYK is the color model commonly used for color printing. The majority of all jobs on campus are printed in CMYK and it is appropriate for the printing of all brand and accent colors.

Web

RGB:

RGB is the color model used for viewing on screens.

Hex Values:

Hex values represent the RGB values of a web color and are primarily used by programmers in the coding of web design.

Each printer will print our brand color differently and some paper stocks will cause shifts in color. For example, uncoated paper will absorb the ink and cause the color to be muted or less intense. However, ink will sit on the top of coated paper, causing colors to appear brighter.

All printed material should closely match PMS 300 blue, because most printing will be done by a laser printer some variation is inevitable. We recommend obtaining a Pantone color swatch to compare with your printed proofs when possible. You can obtain a swatch by ordering a replacement page from pantone.com. If your proof does not match the PMS swatch, work with your print vendor to match it. When it is vitally important that the color is exact, use the Pantone inks to achieve the best color quality.
