Ricks College Football, 1960-61
By LeRoy Dennis '61, Provo, Utah
During the 1960-61 football season, Ricks College was playing Carroll College, a small Catholic College in Montana, when Gary Nebeker, from Burley, Idaho, was knocked unconscious. They took him to the local Catholic hospital. When finally rejoining the team, he told the following story about waking up in the hospital. When he woke up he was surrounded by several Catholic nurses all dressed in white and his immediate reaction, not knowing where he was at, was that he had gone to Heaven and that the Church was not true and the Catholics were right after all.
Another experience that year playing football was the game that was played when the temperature was a sizzling four degrees above zero. Coach Ferron Sonderegger felt so bad for us that at half time he went to town and bought us each a pair of brown jersey work gloves. I can't remember who we played and if we won or lost, but I do remember the frozen ground and someone saying, "quit your complaining, this is just another normal day in Rexburg."
