The
Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Accomplishments to
William "Bill" R. Walker (67) of Sandy, Utah. Bill is
national sales manager for proprietary mutual funds for the U.S.
Division of Citibank Global Asset Management. Bill retired as head
of sales and marketing for the largest real estate syndicator in the
United States. He was then called to preside over the Japan Tokyo
South Mission in 1990. After his mission he returned to the
financial world as vice president for Citibank.
The Distinguished Alumni Award for Humanitarian Service to Dr. Rex E. Head (81) of Rexburg. Following service in the U.S. Air Force, Rex returned to Ricks in 1991 as physician in the Health Center. In 1998 he founded Semester of International Service, a non-profit group aiding an understaffed orphanage in Cuenca, Ecuador. He resigned his post at Ricks in early 2000 to return to Ecuador with his wife and five children and personally direct the program. The Outstanding Young Alumni Award to Michael "Mike" W. Mosman (79) of West Linn, Ore. He is an Assistant United States Attorney, who, as a federal prosecutor, handles a wide variety of cases, including drug smuggling, world-wide money laundering, organized crime, and prosecuting felony crimes on the three major Indian Reservations in Oregon. He met his wife, the former Suzanne Hogan (79) at Ricks. The Eliza R. Snow Award for the Performing Arts to Mary Beth Cooper Cheney (71) of Livermore, Calif. Mary Beth is a homemaker who co-founded the Blankenship Memorial Project which provides piano lessons and singing experiences to children from low income families. She also heads Valley Voices, a private children’s chorus. She is married to Ricks alumnus Nolan Dean Cheney (70), a dentist practicing in Livermore. The Outstanding Teacher Award to Patricia Boyle Christensen (59) of Ucon, Idaho. Patricia, who recently retired from teaching, taught eighth grade English for 22 years at Bonneville Junior High School. She and her husband, Mark, are now volunteer English teachers at Benemerito, a Church-owned high school in Mexico. The Distinguished Emeritus Service Award to Hal and Carma Ferguson and Ivan (47) and Helen Davenport Miller (42). Both couples live in Rexburg. Ferguson taught at Ricks from 1969 to 1991 in the family science department. As a couple they raised a family of 14 children. Miller managed dairies in Idaho and Utah for 30 years, retiring in 1983. Both have served in various capacities in the Jordan River Temple in Utah. The Presidential Service Award to the late Richard "Rick" and Margaret "Peg" Young of St. George, Utah. The Young’s donated property on Vashon Island in Washington’s Puget Sound area. The college shares use of the property for a portion of its Quest program. (See "The Ricks Experience on Vashon Island" in spring 2000 issue.) Tragically, the Youngs were killed July 2, 2000, in a highway accident four miles north of Idaho Falls.
