Architecture is the art and science of designing structures, especially habitable ones. Architects are involved in design activities that range in scale from city and community design to home and furniture design. They work with planners, engineers, graphic designers and builders. Their companies range in size from large to small in both the public and private sectors.
Studying architecture prepares students to be flexible thinkers and to find creative solutions to a wide variety of challenges. They learn to evaluate, organize and refine ideas, developing skills that apply in art, business, science, technology, social studies, literature, and the environment. Students learn to develop solutions in a way that fits building codes that govern construction. They also learn to generate construction documents that contractors can follow, and they make tangible products that stand as testimonies of their work.
Architects usually possess basic skills in computer operation and computer software. They think critically on a variety of social, political, historical and environmental issues. They are inquisitive, analytical, scientific and observant. They think abstractly and like solving math problems. Architects should be able to draw and be interested in nature and art. Architects also need to understand scientific theories.
