What can I do with this Major???


 

The Department of Horticulture prepares students for expanding career oportunities with nurseries, garden centers, florist shops, floral wholesalers, plant and flower brokers, landscape contractors, lawn service companies, interiorscape companies, greenhouses, golf courses, parks and horticulture supply companies. Demand for graduates is strong and most students can choose from several job offers. Students who seek advanced degrees find opportunities in horticulture teaching, research, extension education, corporations, and government service.

 

The ulimate goal of students entering Horticulture programs should be management and/or business ownership.  The Department is a recognized leader in horticulture education having an excellent faculty and facilities, including greenhouses, laboratories, arboretum, and demonstration gardens. Courses which develop skills in home gardening and landscape beautification are available to the general student body.

For students who enjoy planning out a landscape on paper, then putting the plan into action.  You learn the names of the plants and materials you would use, and become well trained in knowing how to design a living space for your customers.

If you enjoy working with plants, watching them grow, and making them desirable for purchase, then production is a great direction of study.

This emphasis is perfect for those who love to design with cut flowers, search the world for unique materials to wholesale to other florists, and take what is produced to the point of purchase.

After the plants have been produced, the design made, the construction completed, someone needs to take care of things.  Training in landscape management prepares students to manage the growth of plants, the irrigation systems, the control of diseases, pests, and maintain the quality of the initial investment.

  • Propogator (introduce new ideas to previous design)
