Frequently Asked Questions
1) Q. What do I need to do to change my major?
A. Visit the appropriate satellite advising office of the major you wish to change in to and they can assist you. To see where the various advising center are you may go to www.byui.edu/advising or come to Benson 208 for assistance.
2). Q. Can I change my major anytime or are there restrictions?
A. There are restrictions. There is a 75 credit limit. If you want to change your major after reaching 75 credits you must come to the Ag & Life Science Advising office and we can assist you in filling out a petition form.
3) Q. How do I substitute or waive a class?
A. Come to the Ag & Lice Science Advising office in Benson 208 and we can help you fill out a substitution form, which we will submit to the Department chair for approval. You may need to provide a course description if the class wishing to substitute was taken at another university.
4) Q. Do I have to declare a minor?
A. Yes, for all of the majors in the Ag & Life Science Department you need to either have to have a minor or 2 clusters.
A. Think of a cluster as being a specialized skill set. It will consist of classes you put together filling 12-15 credits. These classes should benefit you in some way, or help you with your marketability after graduating.
6) Q. What do I need to do to get my cluster classes approved?
A. You need to come into the Ag & Life Science Advising office and fill out 2 cluster forms. Each cluster will have a minimum of 12 credits. This form needs to be signed by you, an advisor, and the department chair of the department which the majority of the credits are in.
7) Q. Do all my cluster classes have to be in the same college department?
A. No. You can combine classes in different disciplines provided there is a theme to the courses chosen.
A. Fast Grad is a way of going to college year round. It allows you to register for classes even on your off track. It gives students the opportunity to finish their education in less time.
9) Q. How do I get on Fast Grad?
A. You must be on either the Summer/Fall or Winter/Summer track, and you must have a minimum of 50 BYU-Idaho college credits. You also must have a minimum GPA of 2.8, and carry at least 15 credits per semester while on fast grad. You must have attended your two previous on-track semesters. If these requirements are met you can come to the Ag & Life Science Advising office in Benson 208 and we will assist you in filling out the application. The application consists of listing each course needed by semester until you graduate.
10) Q. Is there a cap on the number of credits I'm allowed to have while attending this university?
A. Yes. 140 credits is the maximum amount of credits you can have.
11) Q. What do I do if I have reached 140 credits, and still need to take some more classes before I can graduate?
A. If you have reached 140 credits you will need to fill out a petition form to see if you can continue to take classes. You will be required to write out the classes you have left to take in order to graduate.
12) Q. How far in advance should I turn in my graduation application?
A. It is recommended to turn in your graduation application 2 semesters before you plan on graduating.
