What is music?
Music is the science or art of ordering tones or sounds to produce a composition having unity and continuity. The Department of Music at BYU-Idaho offers degrees in music education, all of which are comprehensive, in the following emphases: Choral and General Music Teaching with Early Adolescence/Adolescence Emphasis, and Instrumental and General Music Teaching. The department also offers the following comprehensive major programs: applied instrumental, applied voice, applied piano, composition and theory. In addition to these options, students may choose a major or minor in music-liberal arts.
Why should I consider majoring in music?
Music integrates and develops an understanding of intellect, emotions and senses. As such, it is both a personal and universal art. All baccalaureate degrees in music emphasize the development of skills, concepts and sensitivity essential to the professional life of the musician. Whether a professional performer, teacher or composer, a musician must function as one who exhibits not only technical competence but also a broad knowledge of music and music literature, sensitivity in musical style and an insight into the role and effect of music in society.
What interests and values are related to music?
Music students are usually creative and enjoy expressing themselves, as well as helping others. They also like feeling a sense of achievement and recognition.
