Brigham Young University - Idaho

As a student at Brigham Young University-Idaho, you need to be aware of certain University requirements, including these critical items:

• Catalog Year Requirements
• Credit Requirements
• Foundations Requirements

Catalog Year Requirements

You can select a catalog year from the date you started your studies at BYU-Idaho or later, but please be aware that catalog years expire. If you are a student who started your classes at BYU-Idaho before fall 2008, you must complete your requirements within 6 years of your catalog year (current year + 5) or change to a newer catalog. If you started classes fall 2008 or later, you must finish your requirements within 7 years of your catalog year (current year + 6) or change to a newer catalog year. Please heed this chart:

Credit Requirements

• An associate degree requires a minimum of 60 credits.
• Every bachelor's degree at BYU-Idaho requires a minimum of 120 credits. This means that in addition to degree requirements, you may need some elective courses to reach 120 credits.
• Every bachelor's degree at BYU-Idaho requires at least 30 upper-division credits (300 level class or higher). For catalog years 2009 and later, those 30 upper-division credits must be in residency (taken through BYU-Idaho). For catalog years 2008 and prior, you must take the last 15 credits through BYU-Idaho (on campus or via our online courses).
• After you have earned 60 credits, changing your major requires a petition and graduation plan. Changing your major after 60 credits is not guaranteed.
• Bachelor degrees at BYU-Idaho can be earned with a minimum of 120 credits. BYU-Idaho encourages you to complete your bachelor's degree as close to 120 credits as possible, pursuing 85% progress or better each semester. Please contact your Academic Discovery Center for assistance with class planning so that degree requirements are met as close to 120 credits as possible.

Foundations Requirements, including Eternal Truths

• Every student starting Fall Semester 2008 and later, must complete Foundations requirements in order to earn an associate of science or a bachelor's degree. (Please note that associate of applied science degrees have reduced Foundations requirements.)
• If you are a transfer student with an associate degree (AS or AA) from a regionally accredited institution, the majority of the Foundations requirements are met, but you are still required to take Foundations Capstone (FDCNC 250) and remaining Eternal Truths including Family Foundations (FDREL 200).
• The Eternal Truths (Religion) requirements are part of the Foundations requirements.
  • Each bachelor's degree requires 14 credits of Eternal Truths, including 4 credits of Book of Mormon, 2 credits of Family Foundations (FDREL 200), 4 credits of scripture-based classes, and 4 credits of any other religion class you choose.
  • An associate of science degree requires 8 credits of Eternal Truths classes, including 4 credits of Book of Mormon, 2 credits of Family Foundations (FDREL 200), and 2 credits of any other religion class you choose.
  • Religion classes taken for credit from other Church schools or institutes will be counted as elective credits, but will not fulfill the religion requirements at BYU-Idaho.
  • Book of Mormon classes taken for credit at other Church schools or institutes will fulfill the Book of Mormon requirement at BYU-Idaho. You will not have to retake Book of Mormon but you will need to take other religion courses to meet the minimum Eternal Truths credit requirement here at BYU-Idaho.
  • Transfer students coming to BYU-Idaho may have reduced religion requirements based on the numbers of credits that transfer. Please see the following chart to calculate your Eternal Truth requirement. For questions, please check with your Academic Advising Center.
