Christopher Marlowe¹s great masterpiece is a morality tale of John Faustus
who has risen to the heights of scholarship and academics but finds that all
that he knows does not satisfy him. In a moment of pride and premeditation
Faustus summons Mephastopheles and sells his soul for 24 years of power only
to find in the end his own damnation. The theme of the play may be
summarized in Mephastopheles answer to Faustus¹ question of how
Mephasopheles may be out of hell and in the world. ³Why this is hell, nor am
I out of it/Thinks thou that I who saw the face of God/ and tasted the
eternal joys of heaven/ am not tormented with ten thousand hells/ In being
deprived of everlasting bliss?²
A night of Elizabethan theatre not to be missed.
