Standards of Conduct
Every year we receive reports from school officials telling of prospective educators who had signed agreements to teach in their districts and who later "canceled" these arrangements. Many school officials have been seriously offended by the way in which some students have broken contracts as they are legally binding. We have found that if the reason for breaking a contract is compelling, a superintendent will usually be reasonable in considering a request to terminate the contract if the request is properly made (not announced) and discussed.
Do not sign any agreement if it is at all likely that you will not or cannot fulfill its terms. You will understand the importance of these suggestions if you realize that when you fail to honor your commitments this information can become part of your credentials and you can lose your state certificate/license.
Additional suggestions:
- Please notify the Teacher Career Placement Office promptly when you sign an agreement or contract. At that time, also notify other districts with whom you have applied. We need to know when you have a job so we don't needlessly continue to give out your name to employers.
- Do not continue to have interviews or to search for employment after you have accepted employment.
- Please notify the Teacher Career Placement Office of any name change, whether your file is active or not, so that this important information may be added to your folder.
- To be of assistance to you while you are searching for work, please inform us of any change in your street address, telephone number, or e-mail address.
