 Mission Statement

The mission of the Study Skills Center is to provide assistance to students in learning or improving their study techniques and in developing better study habits that will not only help lead them to successful academic careers, but will also help them in life-long activities.  This assistance is provided to students of all academic levels.

Enrolling in Modules

Students may register for on-line modules until the beginning of the 11th week of the semester.  If they are currently registered as day-time students, they can register by going to the BYU-I home page registration or by contacting the Study Skills Center.  New students or students who are off-track, in various locations of the world, will need to contact our Continuing Education department and follow the instructions for registration found on their web page.   http://www.byui.edu/ce/

Description of Modules

The Study Skills Center offers seven on-line modules that students may choose from:  1) concentration and memorization, 2) note taking, 3) thinking skills, 4) textbook study, 5) time management, 6) test taking, and 7) studying chemistry.  (It is not recommended that a student take the chemistry study module unless they are currently enrolled in a chemistry class as they must use their chemistry text book for several of the assignments.)
  • The modules will take about 12-15 hours each to complete.  Students may register for two modules at the same time and, should they wish, as soon as one is completed may register for a third.  Each module is worth .5 credits and will apply toward graduation under the electives area.
  • The module information is taught using readings, worksheets, and videos.  After a student completes an activity, they submit it to us and an assistant will grade the work.
  • See a more in-depth description of individual Modules by clicking on "Module Information" above.

 Grades

  1. To earn an "A" grade, students must complete a teaching assignment. This assignment requires students to develop a lesson plan, have it pre-approved by a Center assistant, and then teach the concept to someone of their choice.
  2. To earn a "B" grade, students must complete the module but are not required to complete a teaching assignment.
  3. To earn C's, D's, or F's, students complete only a portion of the module.
