By-Laws
Article 1. Official Name & Affiliation
Section 1: The name of the Society shall be Brigham Young University-Idaho Education Society, hereinafter referred to as the Education Society.
Article 2. Membership
Section 1: Membership in the Education Society will be determined according to the following requirements:
- An accepted student of Brigham Young University-Idaho.
- When on track, they are registered full time.
- A declared Education Major or of some major affiliated with Education.
- All members must be registered by submitting name, Major/minor, track, e-mail address, and phone number to edsociety@byui.edu or complete the registration sign-up sheet where available.
- Student accounts of each member will be charged each semester the dues paying fee of $2 to help accommodate for cost and for being part of the Education Society. This will be a recurring charge until one either cancels their own membership or one graduatuates.
Section 2: Member is responsible to register and pay dues at the beginning of each semester. Those who are off track will still be charged the $2 membership fee. They are able to participate and attend activities. They are not eligible to be an elected board member.
Section 3: Persons who do not qualify for membership under the preceding requisites may qualify as a participating member of events and activities, but are not eligible to be voted into a leadership position. They are, however, able to vote and state their say in elections during election time of the semester.
Section 4: One may appeal the membership criteria upon extenuating circumstances. The president and two other officers may choose to issue or deny exception.
Section 5: If members are unable to pay the dues they need to contact the Education Society presidency and submit an exception form.
Article 3. Elections
Section 1: Elections for officers will be done electronically the third month of the semester. All Education Society members are eligible to vote online through the Blackboard Link.
Section 2: In order to qualify for the President position one must have fulfilled a position of the Education Society board in a past semester.
Section 3: In order to qualify for the Vice President, or Secretary positions one must have fulfilled either a board position or a committee member under a board member in a past semester.
Section 4: Members are qualified to fill a board position upon the following requirements:
- Full-time Student.
- On track or in Rexburg
- Previously served on an Education Society Committee.
Section 5: A position is considered open for elections when a board member has completed their term or is resigning from their position. No one may run against an incumbent board member.
Article 4. Presidency and Official Duties
Section 1: The presidency consists of: President, Vice President, and Secretary.
Section 2: The presidency occupants can serve up to three semesters, they must be consecutive and approved by the advisor. Once relieved of their duties because of the track system they must be re-elected if wanting to continue to serve in that role. They do not assume their previous position upon returning. No person is eligible to serve in any elected position for more than six semesters.
Section 3: The President is to head up and run the Education Society under the direction of the advisor, department head, and College Dean of Education. They will report to the advisor in the happenings of the Society. They oversee the Vice President, Secretary in assisting the needs of the Education Society. They will supervise the committees of the Secondary Education Representative, Service Coordinator, and Newsletter Editor. More detail of responsibilities is found in attached "Education Society Jobs and Responsibilities for Board Members."
Section 4: The Vice President is to work with the other presidency members in running the Education Society under the direction of the President, Advisor, Department Head, and College Dean of Education. They will supervise the committees of the Elementary Education Representative, Historian, and Web Master and report to the President of their progress. More detail of responsibilities is found in attached "Education Society Jobs and Responsibilities for Board Members."
Section 5: The Secretary is to work with the other presidency members in running the Education Society under the direction of the President, Advisor, Department Head, and College Dean of Education. They will supervise the committees of the Early Childhood/Special Education Representative, Treasurer, and Publicity and report to the President of their progress. More detail of responsibilities is found in attached "Education Society Jobs and Responsibilities for Board Members."
Article 5. Board Members and Responsibilities
Section 1: The presidency sits at the head of the board.
Section 2: Board members include the presidency, and the other elected positions which are: Secondary Education Representative, Elementary Education Representative, Early Childhood/ Special Education Representative, Service Coordinator, Historian, Treasurer, Newsletter Editor, Webmaster, and Publicity Leader.
Section 3: Each board member will oversee a committee. They will be in charge of creating their own rules and by-laws with the approval of their specified presidency member. All other job descriptions are described in the attached "Education Society Jobs and Responsibilities for Board Members."
Section 4: Board members will follow proper protocol as pre-assigned in Article 4, sections 3, 4, and 5.
Section 5: The board will meet once a week and report on their job and responsibilities and inform board members of occurrences in their committees.
- The presidency and the advisor will assign the specific meeting time and place.
- Each board member is required to attend each meeting. If more than two meetings are missed and are not excused by their specified presidency member, their position can be available for re-election. Emergency situations will be determined by the presidency and the advisor.
Section 6: Board members can serve up to three consecutive semesters with the approval of the presidency and the advisor. Once relieved of their duties because of the track system they must be re-elected if wanting to continue to serve in that role. They do not assume their previous position upon returning. No person is eligible to serve in an elected position for more than six semesters.
Article 6. Committees
Section 1: Each board member will oversee a committee. The committees will vary in size depending upon need.
Section 2: Committee members must fulfill membership requirements.
Section 3: Each committee will meet based upon need of fulfilling requirements applicable to the board members duty.
