General Information Sheet
BYU-Idaho Outdoor Learning Center at Badger Creek
The purpose of this program is to provide experience in outdoor recreation leadership for students who have interests in outdoor education. Those students selected will be able to share their skills, attitudes, and awareness with others-- particularly youth groups in outdoor settings.
WORK AT BADGER: The student will be hired for the entire duration of the summer programming (usually the last weekend in May to mid August.) and will be paid twice per month, plus board and room.
CREDIT OPTION: Recreation Leadership Majors may register internship credit - You should have completed Program Management. Contact Recreation Leadership Department Intern director before the summer terms start.
Duties and responsibilities will include:
1. The experiential teaching of workshops for youth groups, usually 14-18 years old and their leaders, both male and female.
2. The supervision of short expeditions for youth groups.
3. Providing help, instruction and resources for grandparents as they teach their grandchildren at BYU Idaho Outdoor Learning Ctr.
4. Lodge and camp maintenance as directed by the camp director. This includes many hours of heavy work.
5. Meal preparation and clean-up as directed by the camp steward.
6. Clean-up and maintenance of personal sleeping area.
7. Other responsibilities assigned by camp director.
8. Training during Winter Semester.
9. Class enrollment for First Aid, Basic Equitation, Experiential. Education (RL 343) and Water with emphasis in canoeing. (RL224R) or equivalent experience is preferred. Other Leadership classes i.e. Program Management, Facility Management would be helpful.
An Individual selected as a staff member must understand:
1. The staff position is a resident position. Staff members are expected to reside at BYU-Idaho Outdoor Learning Center in quarters provided there from the last of May to Mid August.
2. Each staff member is responsible for his or her personal cleanliness and orderliness. The camp director will monitor private sleeping areas and personal cleanliness.
3. BYU-Idaho standards of dress and grooming are maintained daily..
4. Moral and ethical conduct should always be of the highest grade.
5. The staff member should plan to stay at the BYU-Idaho Outdoor Learning Center throughout the week. L.D.S. members should attend and participate in the local ward and Gospel Standards of Behavior are expected and required.
6. Must have current Advance First Aid Card and/or WFR certification by the time work starts.
7. Must have personal health insurance. Proof of Policy must be provided upon request.
8. Students who do not follow the established BYU-Idaho Honor Code will be discharged.
9. Physical Requirements include:
Students will be given varied experience with youth groups and Elder Hostel programs. Staff members will be used in canoeing
workshops, leading nature walks, horse riding, technical rope skills, evening sky observations, special campfires, outdoor crafts and art, and
other related experiences. It is important that they be versatile in both skill and attitude. Special courses will be required for students hired to
work at the O.L.C.. Staff training will begin May 27th, 2006.
