Hippotherapy

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

The content and emphasis of this course is based on the belief that the goal of working with animals can to help people with disabilities achieve a higher level of independence, self-care, functional performance, social interaction, and emotional/behavioral levels as well as to allow a positive force to influence their outlook on life and themselves.

  1. Interns will be expected to work a flexible schedule, handle horses, and work with clients.

  2. Interns must complete full volunteer training classes, and work 50 hours for each credit taken.  Interns can expect to be very physically active throughout these sessions.

  3. They will take a pre/post test and will have customized options for final grade course work.  This can include choices to write a formal paper; create an     activity, try it with the staff and clients, and leave with us for future use; as well as to assist with creating projects used during sessions prior to the classes.

  4. At the end of the season, all students are required to assist with the Fun Day Horseshow for Clients, friends, parent, and the community.

This internship is only offered during the summer; the end of June through the middle of August; covering an eight week period.
