"We are not bound by tradition, nor are we limited to our own understanding or to the wisdom of men. In short, this is a very unusual university."
- President Kim B. Clark
USU administrator to speak at BYU-Idaho forum
The innovative power of university campuses will be the focus of a Brigham Young University-Idaho forum on Thursday, April 24 at 2:00 p.m. in the Taylor Chapel. Dr. Brent C. Miller, vice president for research at Utah State University, will be the featured speaker.
In his address, titled "Ideas, Inventions, and Innovations," Dr. Miller will examine universities as places of learning, discovery, and engagement in all fields of knowledge. Faculty and student researchers have imaginative ideas that sometimes lead to new ways of understanding and improving the world. Trained as a social science researcher who is now a university research leader, Dr. Miller will present examples of student and faculty ideas and inventions that are literally changing the ways we live and relate to each other.
As vice president of research at Utah State, Dr. Miller has focused on building the university's research capacity by providing resources to recruit and retain outstanding faculty and students, by facilitating interdisciplinary research teams, and by making research support services more helpful and responsive. He has also worked to establish USU research policies and to make sure that USU research is conducted with integrity and in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Dr. Miller completed degrees at Weber State University and Utah State University before completing a Ph.D. in family sociology at University of Minnesota. He has been a faculty member at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and Utah State. He is the author of several books and over 100 articles and chapters, and has received major research grants from federal agencies. He became a fellow of the National Council on Family Relations in 2001.
A question and answer session will follow the forum at 3:00 p.m. BYU-Idaho forums are held monthly to broaden the understanding of students. Leading experts of general interest are invited to speak and often take time to give master classes while they are on campus. Forums are open to the public and are also broadcast on KBYI-FM 100.5.
