BYU-Idaho mechanical engineering students sweep district conference
Students in the Brigham Young University-Idaho chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) competed in the District D Student Professional Development Conference in Tacoma, Washington on March 29-30, winning every competition they entered.
"The BYU-Idaho student section made an outstanding performance capturing first place in the Student Section Competition (a competition that measures student section organization). The student section did not compete last year, but they came in as first year participants to claim first place, which is quite a feat," said Ben Groen, a member of ASME.
BYU-Idaho's ASME student section competed against five other ASME student chapters and delivered an outstanding performance capturing first place in best presentation, best poster, best ASME student section, and most improved student section.
Aaron Ball competed in the Old Guard Technical poster competition displaying his poster on "Crane stress analysis using Mathematica." His first place finish earned him a $200 prize.
Ben Groen competed in the Old Guard Oral Presentation, presenting on "The Cold Composite," also taking first place, winning $500 and a trip to Boston to compete at the national competition.
"The school did extremely well for its first year of competition," Groen said.
