BYU-Idaho String Chamber Ensembles to perform semester-end concert

The newly formed String Chamber Ensembles at Brigham Young University-Idaho will give an end-of-semester performance on Wednesday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m.in the Snow Recital Hall.

The String Chamber Ensemble class is comprised of eight different ensembles ranging from trios to quintets. Musicians play in small groups with no conductor and must negotiate four different interpretations for the music.

"Chamber music is the most intimate type of music making," said Ted Ashton, an instructor in the BYU-Idaho Department of Music.

The class is an example of BYU-Idaho Learning Model in which students teach students. They are coached with some assistance from Ashton, but mainly govern themselves.

"This class is mostly self guided study," Ashton said. "On a regular basis, students coach and assist each other."

Ashton also encourages in-class performances. This gives the ensembles the chance to perform just for their peers as well as evaluate each other. This helps them listen to each other better as well as themselves.

The String Chamber Ensemble was formed last fall after the Chamber Orchestra was merged into the university's Sinfonietta. The ensembles are non-audition, but musicians must have teacher consent to participate.
