Emeritus Tabernacle organist to attend

BYU-Idaho performance of his work

Robert Cundick, emeritus Salt Lake Tabernacle organist, will attend a performance of his "Concerto for Organ and Strings" presented by Daniel Kerr and the Brigham Young University-Idaho Orchestra, under the direction of Kevin Call.

The concert will take place on Friday, March 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Snow Barrus Concert Hall on the BYU-Idaho campus. Tickets can be obtained from the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office by calling 496-2230 or online at www.byui.edu/tickets.

This concert marks Call's debut as conductor of the BYU-Idaho University Orchestra, after 24 years directing the university's Symphony Orchestra. The University Orchestra is a non-auditioned orchestra of nearly 60 string players made up primarily of non-music majors.

"These students play for the sheer love of playing," Call said. "For them, participation in the orchestra is a pure elective. It fills no kind of academic requirement."

After first hearing Cundick's concerto in 1973, Call fell in love with the piece and says it had a profound effect on him as a young music major. "I listened to it over and over on my old reel-to-reel machine in my freshman dorm at BYU. I have always wanted to present it here in Rexburg," he said.

Joining with the orchestra as organ soloist for the concerto will be Daniel Kerr of the Music Department faculty. In addition to regular performances on the Ruffatti organ housed in the Barrus Concert Hall, Kerr is a regular recitalist on the organs at Temple Square in Salt Lake City.

Included on the balance of the orchestra's program will be the "Dances for Strings and Harp" by French composer Claude Debussy. It will feature Jill Hubbard, a senior harp student from Richmond, Ohio. The orchestra will also present works by Mozart, Warlock, and Elgar.
