BYU-Idaho Baroque Ensemble to perform Vivaldi's The Four Seasons

The Brigham Young University-Idaho Baroque Ensemble will perform Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons using historic replicas of 18th century instruments. The performance will take place Thursday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Barrus Concert Hall. Tickets are $6 for the general public and $3 for BYU-Idaho students.

"I think that the audience will really enjoy these colorful pieces. They are very satisfying when played on baroque style instruments, said Robert Tueller, director of the Baroque Ensemble. "We plan on using ‘supertitles' projected during the concert. This gives the audience the chance to see the poetry that Vivaldi used to inspire each of the concertos. The instruments are literally used to represent such things as birds, streams, storms, animals, etc."

The Baroque Ensemble performance will feature violinist Emma Rubinstein. Ms. Rubinstein has performed as a guest soloist and chamber musician nationally and internationally. She was a first violinist for both the Oxford String Quartet at Miami University of Ohio and the Anacapa String Quartet, which toured throughout the United States, Costa Rica and France, receiving many honors, awards and commissions. Ms. Rubinstein received a Master of Music degree from Yale University.

"Preparing Vivaldi's The Four Seasons concerto with violinist Emma Rubinstein has been a very rewarding musical experience. The ensemble has really benefitted from her musicality," Tueller said.

The BYU-Idaho Baroque Ensemble focuses on authentic period performance of chamber literature from the 17th and 18th centuries, with emphasis on issues of baroque performance practice. The Ensemble introduces students to a variety of baroque chamber music literature not normally encountered in Symphony Orchestra or Sinfonietta.

Students gain experience in performance practice issues specific to the music of the 17th and 18th centuries, including bowing and articulation, flexible instrumentation, dynamics, notational problems, and improvisation, including solo and figured bass realization.
