BYU-Idaho faculty member to premiere concerto

Three Contemplations, a concerto written by Brigham Young University-Idaho Department of Music faculty member Mark Watkins, will premiere Friday, February 29. The concert will take place in the Barrus Concert Hall at 7:30pm and will cost $3 for students and $6 for the public.

The concerto will be performed by the BYU-Idaho Symphony Band, conducted by Diane Soelberg. Playing along with the band will be the jazz saxophone quartet, FOUR, and the faculty trio including piano, bass and drums.

The piece has three movements. The first is called "With Friends Like These" and was originally premiered in 1998. The second movement is called "Of Things Hoped For," originally premiered in 1999. The concerto is now complete with the third movement called "Felice para siempre," which means happily ever after. Watkins finished the piece over Christmas.

It is a "third stream, a mix between classical and jazz," Watkins said. Watkins believes it will have "great audience appeal."
