"We are not bound by tradition, nor are we limited to our own understanding or to the wisdom of men. In short, this is a very unusual university."

BYU-Idaho community invited to submit texts for upcoming Hymn Festival
The Brigham Young University-Idaho community is invited to participate in the Third Annual Hymn Festival. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to submit original hymn texts for use in the festival, which will be held February 12, 2008.
Submissions are due by Tuesday, November 27 to Daniel Kerr in the BYU-Idaho Music Department office. Entries should include name, address, phone number and e-mail.
All submitted hymn texts must include at least one scripture reference supporting the doctrine of the text. The texts chosen will be forwarded to BYU-Idaho music students, who will create a new hymn tune and harmonization.
When writing a hymn text, special consideration should be given to the meter of the hymn. Texts should follow a common poetic meter, which can be found on page 405 of the LDS hymnal. The hymn text can also be submitted in connection with an existing LDS hymn tune.
Ideas for possible hymn ideas include: temples, the Restoration, the Prophet Joseph Smith, or any doctrinal topic not already widely covered in the existing LDS Hymnal. New verses to existing hymns may also be submitted.
Questions about the Hymn Festival can be submitted to Daniel Kerr in the Music Department at 496-1288 or at kerrd@byui.edu.
