BYU-Idaho student competes in national automotive competition

Charlie Andersen, junior at Brigham Young University-Idaho majoring in automotive technology, placed seventh out of 43 students at the national SkillsUSA contest June 28 in Kansas City. This was the first year BYU-Idaho participated in this annual event.

"I went into this competition just to enjoy the experience," said Andersen. "BYU-Idaho has prepared me to compete on the same level, if not a higher level, as other students from all over the country."

Contestants diagnosed computer and electrical problems on vehicles, measured engine and transmission components, took several written tests, replaced timing belts and demonstrated their skills in using automotive service software.

"We are extremely impressed with the work Charlie has done," said Justin Miller, an instructor in the BYU-Idaho Department of Automotive Technology. "He has set the bar high for future BYU-Idaho automotive technology students."

SkillsUSA, formerly known as VICA (Vocational Industrial Clubs of America), is a student leadership and technical skills development organization that has representation in every state in the United States. Andersen qualified for the national competition after placing first in the Idaho state automotive technical service contest. One student was chosen from each state to participate in the national competition.
