"We are not bound by tradition, nor are we limited to our own understanding or to the wisdom of men. In short, this is a very unusual university."

BYU-Idaho Social Work Department gives service to homeless shelter
The Brigham Young University-Idaho Department of Sociology and Social Work spent the entire month of June giving their time and service to the City of Refuge, a homeless shelter in Idaho Falls.
The Social Work Council coordinated the event, in which 68 students prepared and served meals to more than 30 people at the City of Refuge a dozen times in June. Students were also able to interact with them and get first-hand experience in the social work field.
"As a council, we believe it is so important to be involved with the community," said Jessica Moyle, service coordinator for the Social Work Council. "One of the most effective ways to understand the community around you is to donate your time and talents to people in need."
The Social Work Council coordinates one large service project each semester. A council member had previously worked with the City of Refuge and suggested it as a great place to serve others several hours at a time.
"This was a huge time commitment. Many of us have jobs, a heavy school schedule and several other commitments," Moyle said. "However, the students involved were greatly blessed for their service to those who are less fortunate."
