"We are not bound by tradition, nor are we limited to our own understanding or to the wisdom of men. In short, this is a very unusual university."

BYU-Idaho Rec Sports makes changes to program
Brigham Young University-Idaho Recreational Sports recently made changes to the program, creating new leagues, offering online captain's meetings and allowing off-track students to participate.
The leagues are now divided into independent and ward, but there are still the different levels of competition. Now students are able to play on both an independent and ward team.
"We wanted to encourage students to socialize in their ward," said Trent Tustian, Recreational Sports advisor. "Previously, students had to choose between playing with their ward's team and playing on an independent team with other friends."
In addition to these new divisions, a table tennis league was created, and students can now "attend" captain's meetings online.
"Attending the captain's meeting every semester started to become repetitive to many students," said Tustian. "It is still crucial they know the guidelines of the sport, but now they can review the policies on their own time."
Matriculating students can now participate in recreational and competitive sports. Matriculating means the students are off-track but are still admitted to BYU-Idaho and will attend an upcoming semester. Prior to this semester, off-track students were not allowed to participate.
"We recognized the desire for many off-track students to still participate in the recreational sports program," Tustian said. "These students look forward to playing, and we did not want to neglect that desire."
