"We are not bound by tradition, nor are we limited to our own understanding or to the wisdom of men. In short, this is a very unusual university."

Hot Club of San Francisco concert to feature silent films
A night of gypsy jazz music and black-and-white surrealistic films will be featured at a concert by the Hot Club of San Francisco on Wednesday, May 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Barrus Concert Hall at BYU-Idaho.
Sponsored by the BYU-Idaho Center Stage Performing Arts Series, the concert will feature the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's pioneering Hot Club de France.
Tickets can be purchased from the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office by calling 496-2230 or online at www.byui.edu/tickets. Tickets are $12 for the general public and $5 for BYU-Idaho students.
The program also includes two short silent films by Charlie Bowers, "Now You Tell One" (1926) and "It's a Bird" (1930), as well as "The Land Beyond the Sunset" by Thomas A. Edison, Inc., (1912).
The Hot Club of San Francisco borrows the all-string instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club, but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group's lead guitarist Paul Mehling.
Hearing the ensemble live, or on any of their eight albums, carries the listener back to the 1930's and to the small jazz clubs of Paris or the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entertained audiences around the world for over 10 years.
