"We are not bound by tradition, nor are we limited to our own understanding or to the wisdom of men. In short, this is a very unusual university."

BYU-Idaho Art Department instructor exhibits "one-man" art show
Vince Bodily, an instructor in the Brigham Young University-Idaho Department of Art, will exhibit a one-man show from May 9 to June 1 in the Spori Gallery on the BYU-Idaho campus.
Inspired by great head and figure painters such as Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio and Diego Velázquez, this one-man show is almost exclusively head and figure paintings with over fifty oil paintings completed in the past two years. This show is the final outcome of a professional development leave that BYU-Idaho sponsored during Winter Semester 2005.
"The nature of painting the human head and figure is something that requires a great deal of training, knowledge acquisition and the development of an artistic vision," said Bodily. "My intention was to learn more about and increase my skill and personal vision in painting people and reach a much higher level of artistic practice than I had achieved before my professional development leave."
In addition to heads and figures, Bodily is including one of his personal favorite pieces, a large landscape called a Portrait of My Childhood. It expresses his memories of a somewhat idyllic childhood.
Bodily learned a great deal from his leave, including the need to develop more basic skills.
"As I teach my own students, because I have learned that we must ‘grow from grace to grace,' we must build more advanced ideas upon the mastery of basic principles and practices," said Bodily. "Two years later I find myself still focusing on basic practices: painting a good head."
"We are blessed to have superb collections of art at this university, as well as outstanding art professors who inspire the hearts and hands of our students," said Brenda Benedict, manager of the Spori Art Gallery. "If anyone has not visited the Spori Art Gallery, they are truly missing one of the great treasures of this university."
Anyone interested is invited to attend a reception for the artist on May 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Spori Gallery. For a list of upcoming exhibits, please see www.byui.edu/artgallery.
