Shanghai Quartet to perform two programs at BYU-Idaho

 

The Shanghai Quartet will perform at Brigham Young University-Idaho Nov. 16 and 17 at 7:30 p.m. as part of the Center Stage Performing Arts Series.

 

Originally formed in Shanghai, China, this versatile string quartet is known for its passionate musicality, technique and multicultural innovations.

 

Tickets are $10 for the general public and $5 for BYU-Idaho students and available from the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office, by calling 496-2230 or online at www.byui./edu/tickets.

The quartet will perform two separate programs in the Barrus Concert Hall as part of the Center Stage Performing Arts Series.

 

The Nov. 16 program will include the Beethoven Quartet in B-flat Major, Op.18/ 6; selections from "Chinasong" (Chinese folk songs arranged for string quartet by Yi-Wen Jiang); and Brahms Quartet in C minor, Op.51/1. The Nov. 17 program will feature the Beethoven Quartet in C minor, Op.18/4; Barber Quartet, Op.11; and Bartok Quartet No. 1.

 

Since its founding at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, the quartet has amassed a long list of performance collaborators and established a distinguished teaching record. They have been seen on stage with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, David Soyer, Eugenia Zukerman, Sharon Isbin, Ruth Laredo and Arnold Steinhardt.

 

The quartet will be conducting a four-day residency with BYU-Idaho students while in Rexburg. They currently serve as the quartet-in-residence at Montclair State University in New Jersey and also serve as visiting professors at the Shanghai Conservatory and the Central Conservatory in China.

 

The quartet has made regular appearances at Carnegie Hall and also served as ensemble-in-residence at the Tanglewood and Ravinia Festivals. They have made appearances at Lincoln Center's Mostly Mozart Festival and on PBS's "Great Performers" television series..
