BYU-Idaho Department of Music announces a call for hymn texts by students and employees

Brigham Young University-Idaho students, faculty, and staff are invited to submit original hymn texts for use in the second annual BYU-Idaho Hymn Festival to be held in February.

Submissions chosen for use will be forwarded to BYU-Idaho music students, who will create a new hymn tune and harmonization for the submitted text.  The text should follow a common poetic meter for hymns; more information about this can be found on page 405 of the hymnal.  Or, if desired, the new hymn text can be sung to an existing Latter-day Saint hymn tune.

Also, instead of creating an entirely new hymn text, an additional verse (or verses) to an existing Latter-day Saint hymn can be submitted.

Any gospel topic can be addressed.  Some possibilities include:

  • the Prophet Joseph Smith
  • the Restoration of the Gospel
  • the Sacrament
  • topics not widely covered in the current hymnal, such as baptism, covenants, tithing, etc.

Submissions are due Thursday, November 30 to Daniel Kerr in the Music Department office, Snow 222.  Please include your name, address, phone number, e-mail, and a scripture reference that supports the text, like those provided in the hymnal. For more information, contact Daniel Kerr at Ext. 1288 or kerrd@byui.edu.
