LDS Church Humanitarian Emergency Response Director to speak at Brady Howell Lecture Series

Garry R. Flake, Director of LDS Humanitarian Emergency Response, will speak at a Brigham Young University-Idaho Forum this Thursday, October 19 at 2 p.m. in the Taylor Chapel with a question-and-answer session to follow at 3 p.m.

Flake is this year's speaker in the Brady Howell Lecture Series, an annual event honoring the life of Brady Howell, who attended Ricks College and was killed at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

Kenneth and Jeanette Howell, Brady's parents, are responsible for the endowed lecture series.  They choose speakers who share educational and professional similarities with Brady.

"Brady's real desire was to have 10 or 15 years work experience and then come back to BYU-Idaho and teach," Kenneth Howell said.  "We have tried to select speakers who are educators but also have real world experience."

The title of Flake's forum is "Extending Kindness to all Mankind."  He will discuss the worldwide outreach of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in lifting up and helping victims in emergency situations through the generosity of its members.

"Through Brother Flake's efforts the Church is helping thousands," Howell said.  "He is a good example of someone who has dedicated his life to helping others."

The Howell's encourage students begin to look at career possibilities in the public sector where they can have a positive influence in countries and communities.  "We hope students, faculty and community residents will come away with the desire to help other people." Howell said.
