"We are not bound by tradition, nor are we limited to our own understanding or to the wisdom of men. In short, this is a very unusual university."

Spitfire Grill to be performed at BYU-Idaho
The musical Spitfire Grill, which appeared off Broadway just six years ago, will be performed at Brigham Young University-Idaho from Wednesday, October 18 to Saturday, October 28 in the Kirkham Arena Theatre.
The play is based on a film that was released in 1996, but this is a musical version for the stage. The story revolves around Percy Talbot, who has just been released from prison. She chooses a little town in Wisconsin called Gilead to start her life over. The story revolves around how she influences the members of the community and the town, as well as the changes and the growth that she goes through in finding herself again.
"It is a terrific story about acceptance, judging, and this woman's journey through grief and redemption and how she literally goes through the process of accessing the Atonement for relieving her burdens," said Roger Merrill of the Theatre Department. "We quote the Protestant hymn that there is a balm in Gilead to heal the wounded soul. That is really the basis of the play-healing and renewal. It is just a beautiful story."
Because of the serious subject matter, Spitfire Grill is only recommended those 12 and older. "This is not because it is inappropriate, but that the subject matter is more on an adult level in dealing with the trials that she (Percy) has gone through in her life," said Merrill. "There is nothing inappropriate for children, but just more mature themes that are probably better suited for older children or adults."
Spitfire Grill has only been available for production for a couple of years. "It is always fun to see something new that you are not familiar with," said Merrill. "The audience won't be as familiar with this play, but I think it will be a very rewarding experience and a great night out."
Tickets are $6 for the general public and $3 for BYU-Idaho students. They can be purchased at the BYU-Idaho ticket office, by calling 496-2230 or online at www.byui.edu/tickets.
