President of Logan Utah Temple teaches BYU-Idaho students to listen to voice of the Holy Ghost

Dennis E. Simmons, president of the Logan Utah Temple, taught Brigham Young University-Idaho students to listen to the Holy Ghost in a devotional address on Tuesday, October 10.

President Simmons explained the difference between the church of God and the church of the devil, the "whore of all the earth." "No other word describes what we are talking about," Simmons said.  "A ‘whore' is one who sells what is most precious.  A church is determined by what is worshiped.  We live in a time when some belong to the church of God, and some to the church of the devil."

President Simmons quoted President James E. Faust, who detailed the many enticing voices the adversary uses to smother the voice of the spirit.  He described intellectual, proud, flattering, cynical, entertaining, commercial and delirious voices.

"As Mormon pointed out, only one voice can lead us," Simmons said.  "Heavenly Father has continuously warned us against the wisdom of the world.  Isaiah instructs us on the wide disparities between God and man, ‘neither are your ways my ways' (Isaiah 55:8)."

President Simmons encouraged students to study and learn about the doctrine of Christ.  He said students should feast upon the words of Christ and not nibble, but devour.

Reviewing the doctrine of Christ, President Simmons said a person must have faith, repent, be baptized, receive the Holy Ghost, feast upon the words of Christ, pray unceasingly, and do the work.  Then he may speak with the power of angels (2 Nephi 31).

"The ultimate objective of the doctrine of Christ is to receive the Holy Ghost to tell us what we should do," he said.  "We must deicide on an ongoing basis if we will receive it or if we will hear the other voices.  We must learn to speak his language."

President Simmons concluded by reminding students "our earthly probation, our time to prove ourselves, is of limited duration.  The voices will grow louder and louder, but there is only one that matters."

Next week's devotional speaker will be Elder Robert K. Dellenbach of the First Quorum of the Seventy. Devotionals are held every Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Hart Auditorium with additional seating in the Hinckley Chapel, Taylor Chapel and Kirkham Auditorium. Devotionals are broadcast on KBYI-FM 100.5 at 2 p.m. and rebroadcast Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 5 p.m.
