Enrollment at BYU-Idaho increases to more than 13,500 for Fall Semester 2006

A greater number of students are being served at Brigham Young University-Idaho according to new statistics released Wednesday by the university registrar. Total enrollment for Fall Semester 2006 is up 1,220 students compared to the same time last year.

Official fall enrollment is 12,208 full-time equivalent students, compared to 11,273 for Fall Semester 2005. (Full-time equivalent or FTE is calculated by dividing the total number of credits being taken by 15.)

"The increase can be attributed to a greater number of continuing students on campus," said Kevin Miyasaki, university registrar. "Last fall, we had 8,556 continuing students. This semester, that number has increased 9,873. The number of new and returning students remained nearly the same."

The actual head count stands at 13,523, compared to 12,303 for last fall. The student body consists of 4,776 freshmen, 3,172 sophomores, 2,417 juniors, and 3,158 seniors. The average number of credit hours per student is 13.5.

There are currently 3,253 married students, or 24.1 percent of the entire student body. There are 7,596 female students (54.2 percent) compared to 5,927 male students (45.8 percent).

Students at BYU-Idaho represent all 50 states with the majority coming from: Idaho, 5,006; Utah, 1,360; California, 1,360 and Washington, 1,044. There are currently 480 international students representing 59 countries including: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, South Korea, and Tanzania.

The majority of BYU-Idaho students fall in the 18-25 age group. However, the age of currently enrolled students ranges from 15 to 76. A total of 4,912 students have served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, up 105 from this time last year.

The most popular majors are general studies (1,381 students), business (1,340 students), elementary education (865), biology (755 students), and communication (754 students).
