Sophomore and junior students pursuing a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering at Brigham Young University-Idaho are invited to apply to the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program.

This national scholarship program is designed to provide opportunities for outstanding U.S. students with excellent academic records who have demonstrated interest in, and potential for, careers in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. The scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

To qualify, students must be a current full-time sophomore or junior who will pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering, have a B average or equivalent, stand in the upper fourth of the class and be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or U.S. national.

Noel Zaugg, a faculty member in the chemistry department at BYU-Idaho and the Goldwater Faculty Representative, said, “Three hundred scholarships are awarded nation wide. Last year, two students from the University of Idaho received the award, so it’s very selective. Recognition of BYU-Idaho would increase if a student from here received an award.”

For a packet of information, students should contact Noel Zaugg in Romney 204 by December 15. Students interested in applying must be nominated by their university.
