The Heber J. Grant Scholarship Program was
recently established at Brigham Young University-Idaho to
provide support to students who have overcome circumstances in
their lives which could have impacted their future.
The program is named for Heber J. Grant, seventh president of
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. President Grant
was raised in poverty by his widowed mother. He went on to
become a skilled businessman and influential church leader
through hard work and persistence.
As part of the scholarship application, students must provide a
description of their previous situation along with a complete
explanation of what they have done during the semester in their
personal time, including work, extracurricular involvement, etc.
The scholarship awarded depends on how well students make use of
their time.
Brother Ben Packer, Recruitment Coordinator with Admission and
Scholarships at BYU-Idaho, said, “After reading students’
applications, they teach us anything can be overcome with faith
and the Spirit. These students help enlighten our campus and
other students around them.”
Brother Packer believes BYU-Idaho is a good fit for this
scholarship program because as “enrollment continues to
increase, ordinary people are doing extraordinary things and the
campus is student centered.”
Antje Urban, a senior from Dresden, Germany, assisted with the
beginning process of the scholarship. When asked what she
enjoyed most about helping, she responded, “It is exciting to
able to see what a difference we can make in these students
lives. BYU-Idaho is great a place where students can learn and
then go back and be leaders in their community.”
Jonathon Ubri, a recipient of the scholarship last semester, was
extremely grateful for the scholarship. “It helped me better
understand service and build relationships with people,” he
said.
The scholarship deadline for winter semester is December 1. For
