Students and faculty from the Brigham Young University-Idaho College of Physical Science and Engineering enjoyed a guest speaker at their college Forum on November 9. Dr. Leonard J. Bond, Director of the Center for Advanced Energy Studies, was invited to share his experiences and expertise on current energy issues.

Dr. Bond frankly and humorously described the challenges of supplying the world’s energy needs, calling the United States the “world’s energy hogs” because 5 percent of the world’s population consumes 25 percent of the energy resources. Developing nations are also competing to claim more of the limited fossil fuels. “You will wish and tell your children how you only had to pay $3 per gallon of gasoline,” he said. “Ten dollars per gallon of gasoline is not beyond reality in your lifetime.”

Dr. Bond said the solution to the fuel crisis is nuclear energy. He extolled the virtues of safe, clean nuclear power, and encouraged students to educate their friends about nuclear energy. “It is up to you to decide where the world goes,” he said.

Dr. Bond holds bachelor’s and doctorate degrees in physics from The City University, London. His studies range from nuclear fusion to marine technology, and he has authored over 200 publications. Dr. Bond is currently an affiliate faculty member at the University of Idaho and Idaho State University.
