Young, married families will have a chance to receive valuable instruction and information at the first annual Family Resource Fair. The event, organized by the Brigham Young University-Idaho Social Work Department, will be held Wednesday, November 9 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Manwaring Center East Ballroom.

The idea and plans for the fair were created by the Social Work 365 class, taught by Martin McDonell, as a final project for the semester. The event is open to married students only and admission is free.

“Our class took an assessment of the needs in the community and realized that married student families weren’t fully aware of all the resources that are available to them,” McDonell said. “We decided to have a family resource fair where young couples can learn about these resources that will increase the well-being for them and their children.”

Information booths will be set up in the ballroom where families can learn more about resources available in the community. These resources include:
    • Child immunization
    • Insurance information
    • Shaken baby syndrome
    • Health Services
    • Dental Care
    • Managing Finances
    • Proper Nutrition
    • Services provided through the Department of Health and Welfare
    • LDS Family Services

Another feature of the fair is a parent-child look-a-like contest from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to take part in this contest. The grand prize will be a free sitting portrait of the winning parent and child together. There will also be raffle drawings for free date nights.
