During the first week of the semester, the
15 students enrolled in the Home and Family Education Methods
Class at Brigham Young University-Idaho were introduced to a
project of creating a new exhibit in the McKay Library Gallery
using vintage hats ranging from the early 1900’s through the
1960’s.
The display in the gallery shows the changing styles of hats
over the years.
“My favorite hats are the feathered ones because they show the
creativity of designers and women when trying to come up with
something to adorn their heads,” Sabrina Schoof, a senior in the
methods class, said.
Included in the display is an old missionary hat along with a
century-old scripture case and timepiece. “It is fun to realize
hats have played an important role in our ancestral heritage
throughout time,” Schoof said.
A book display in the walkway between the east and west wings of
the library and a new bulletin board design near the north door
of the library also follows the hat theme of the McKay Gallery.
“In this methods class, we’re preparing for student teaching
next semester and we thought creating a display for the library
was a chance to gain experience in setting up a display, taking
pictures, creating a book display and designing a bulletin
board,” Schoof said.
Rhonda Lyman, a faculty member in the Home and Family Department
and instructor for the methods class, said, “I feel this gives
the students an opportunity to do a display, similar to one they
might do in their secondary classes. This gives them the chance
to see what needs to be accomplished to have a good display.”
The public is encouraged to visit the charming displays created
by the students of the Home and Family Department. The exhibit
can be seen during regular library hours through October 31. |
