The wacky theatrical presentation of
“FROGZ” will be performed at Brigham Young University-Idaho
Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 2 and 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the
Kirkham Auditorium in Rexburg.
Tickets for this Center Stage Performing Arts Series
presentation are $10 for the general public and $2 for BYU-Idaho
students. They are available from the BYU-Idaho Ticket Office in
the Manwaring Center, by calling 496-2230 or online at
www.byui.edu/tickets.
Presented by Imago Theatre of Portland, Ore., “FROGZ” is
creature theater at its best, populated with escaped penguins,
silent sloths, finicky frogs and devilish strings.
“FROGZ” is mask theatre in which all the performers faces
covered in masks, and, most of the time, completely dressed in
costumes that disguise the fact that they are even human. In
rapid succession giant frogs, lizards, crocodiles, accordions, a
10-foot tall paper bag and other assorted animals, creatures and
shapes take their place on the stage and perform short skits and
blackouts.
The cast of five create high drama, comedy and breathtaking
visual effects from the simplest theatrical devices. There’s a
sequence in which an amphibious creature performs an amazing
gymnastic routines and another in which a cat hilariously
attempts to climb out of giant paper bag.
Imago Theatre began in 1979 performing exclusively mask theater
in small communities in the Northwest, but it was only six years
later, in 1986, that the company’s international touring began
and continues to this day. Imago's explorations of the stage
began as a combination of theatre, movement and the visual arts
as influenced by renowned theater master Jacques Lecoq of Paris,
France.
In 2001 Imago’s “FROGZ” completed a two-week run on Broadway and
returned to the acclaimed New Victory Theatre for a four-week
run in May 2002.
Claiming numerous Drammy nominations and awards, as well as
consistent honors from the National Endowment for the Arts,
Imago’s work has been seen on national television on several
continents and also through extensive tours to Europe, Asia and
throughout North America. Imago recently completed a six-week
engagement of “FROGZ” at the Tony Award winning American
Repertory Theater in Boston. |
