The Brigham Young University-Idaho Automotive Department received a valuable donation from Taylor Chevrolet of Rexburg on Thursday, September 29. The donation consisted of diagnostic equipment which will aid students who are studying to become automotive technicians.

“It is a significant donation. It is a piece of equipment we have been wanting to have for quite a while and have been trying to get the funding for,” Troy Spratling, BYU-Idaho Associate Dean of the College of Physical Sciences and Engineering and automotive instructor, said. “It will be heavily used. Many of the vehicles that come through our shop doors are General Motors products and this is a scan tool dedicated for General Motors products.”

Speaking of the association between BYU-Idaho and Taylor Chevrolet, owner Dave Taylor said, “We feel attached to BYU-Idaho and not only like to be a part of them, but we feel a need to have well-qualified, well-trained technicians. It has been a good, healthy relationship. We have people from the school now, two or three apprentices, so it is ongoing.”

Spratling noted that the Automotive Department has a good correspondence with several dealerships in the Rexburg and surrounding areas. Each year they learn from these dealerships what is necessary for curriculum and work together to create job and internship opportunities for students.

The BYU-Idaho Automotive Department offers a bachelor’s degree in Automotive Technology Management and an associate of applied science degree in Automotive Technology.
