Spirit Week at Brigham Young
University-Idaho will be celebrated October 11-15. Events
relating to the celebration will run the entire week and will
offer various activities for community members, students,
faculty, and alumni to be involved in.
Student Council Executive Vice President Ryan Ball explained the
role of students in the preparation for Spirit Week. “Students
are making it happen, they are the heart of Spirit Week.”
Ball views Spirit Week as having a three-fold mission. “One is
to have a good time and celebrate, two is to provide a venue to
gain the spirit of the school – almost an expression of
gratitude for all things at this school,” Ball said. “And third
is to reach out or bond with the rest of the city and
community.”
The week’s activities will have a significant start on Tuesday,
October 11 as the Inauguration of President Kim B. Clark will
take place during the regular devotional hour. This comes after
Clark was named the new president of BYU-Idaho on June 6, 2005.
Later that evening a Spirit Rally will be held with relay races,
torch lighting and fireworks in Viking Stadium starting at 7:30
p.m.
Wednesday, October 12 will be Activities Involvement Day, which
is set to encourage students to take part in the activities of
the week. A fitness relay will be held at the Library Quad from
4-6 p.m. Outdoor Activities will put on “Marshmallow Wars” in
the Arboretum beginning at 5 p.m. A team knowledge bowl, which
is sponsored by Academic Activities, will conclude Wednesday’s
events, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Hinckley Cultural Hall.
Thursday, October 13 will start with a Spirit Week Service Forum
in the Taylor Chapel at 2 p.m. People will then have an
opportunity to give service though the Happy Factory
Humanitarian Organization Service in the MC Lobby from 6-8 p.m.
Thursday night’s activities include an Alumni vs. Students
Volleyball match in the Hart Auxiliary Gym starting at 7 p.m.
and the Miss BYU-Idaho pageant in the Hart Auditorium, beginning
at 7:30 p.m.
On Friday, October 14 a Spirit Week Luncheon will be held in the
MC West Ballroom at noon. The cost is $3 for students and $7 for
non-students. The Spirit Week formal will be held that night
from 8:30-11:30 p.m. in the MC West and East Ballroom.
Friday will also be the day BYU-Idaho student Claudiu Bora tries
to step his way into the Guinness World Records book for running
the most stairs in a day. Bora will begin running at Viking
Stadium at 4 a.m. and will keep going until 12:30 a.m. Friday.
Everyone is encouraged to come support Claudiu as he embarks on
this record achievement.
