Boy Scouts from around the
local area will gather on the Brigham Young University-Idaho
campus Saturday, October 15 and Saturday, October 22 to
participate in their annual Merit Badge Pow-Wow. The Pow-Wow
will run from 8:30 a.m. - noon both days.
The event
is organized by members of the BYU-Idaho Service Activities
program. It provides an opportunity for young men in the Boy
Scout program to earn merit badges. This year, 37 various merit
badges will be offered to Scouts participating. Subjects will be
taught by student and community volunteers.
Paul Rhien,
a student at BYU-Idaho, and Volunteer Coordinator for the pow-wow,
recognizes how important this program is and how it helps those
who attend.
“The Boy
Scout program influences a lot of young men’s lives for good,
teaching them various skills and engraining in them timeless
values and character,” Rhein said. “I am, in part, who I am
because of the things that a combination of the gospel and
Scouting taught me. It has impacted me in a way that when the
opportunity to work with the pow-wow through the Service
Activities program came, I was anxious to get involved and give
back to these young men.”
Pow-wow
organizers are looking for male and female volunteers to fill
approximately 220 instructor positions. Volunteers can choose
from a variety of courses and don’t need to be professionals to
sign up for a particular field. Instructors will receive the
information they need to teach and will be in charge of passing
the Scouts off once they have completed the course.
Those
interested in volunteering can either visit the BYU-Idaho
Leadership Service Office, located in the Manwaring
Center,
Room 380, or contact the group by e-mail at
powwow@byui.edu. Additional information can also be found
on the pow-wow website at
