BYU-Idaho Chamber Orchestra to perform two concerts

    REXBURG, Idaho-
    Writer: Adam Alder

The Brigham Young University-Idaho Music Department’s Chamber Orchestra will perform in concert October 6 and 7, beginning at 7:30 p.m. each night, in the Barrus Concert Hall.

The Chamber Orchestra is the combination of three groups – the Chamber Brass, Chamber Strings and Chamber Winds. All three groups are made up of music majors.

The group will perform different programs each night. The first night, October 6, will first feature the Chamber Winds performing dectets by Soler and Raff and quintets by Beethoven and Danzi. Then, the Chamber Brass will perform works by Gabrielli, Handel and Benjamin Britten. The final part of the evening will feature the full Chamber Orchestra performing Franz Schubert’s Symphony no. 8, often referred to as the “Unfinished Symphony”.

The second night’s concert includes the Chamber Strings performing Elgar’s Serenade for Strings and the Don Quixote Suite by Telemann. Then the group will perform short works for strings by Sibelius, Faure, Phillip Glass and a “rock” piece called Skylife by David Balakrishnan of the Turtle Island String Quartet. The group will conclude the night by playing Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony.” This will be done without a conductor in an effort to teach the group to listen more carefully and to work as a unit.

Ticket costs for both concerts are $2 for non-students and $1 for students.
